Earth Day is coming up this month, and I have 3 books to help us celebrate our beautiful planet! And don’t forget to scroll to the bottom for an Earth Day freebie, as well my bestselling resource – a Planet Project ideal for spring!
- One Plastic Bag – This is an inspiring story of Isatou Ceesay who decided to take her village’s trash problem into her own hands – literally. Along with a handful of friends, Ceesay picked up the plastic bags littered throughout her village in Gambia and used the plastic to weave beautiful handbags. It’s an amazing true story of the difference just one person can make.
2. The Street Beneath My Feet – This is a fun fold-out story of what is happening right beneath our feet! This detailed book is fun to read aloud, although I have most enjoyed reading bits and pieces, and then leaving it out for kids to explore.
3. Dear Earth – This story is literally a love letter from Tessa to Earth. The whimsical illustrations and rhythmic writing make it so fun to read aloud. This book is also packed full of figurative language! An easy mini-lesson could be completed just by identifying the similes and metaphors used on nearly every page!
Free Earth Day Download
After reading one (or all!) of these books, give student time to reflect on how they can make a change to their daily habits. This FREE Earth Day Fact Fan is a great way to get students writing, and they publish their thinking on the interactive fan!
Planet Project
Finally, my favorite project to complete with students. Planets Fact Fan is the perfect combination of beginning research + science content. The project works well as independent work, but even better as group work!
Split students into groups and they can each tackle one planet. Together they can publish a Fact Fan for the classroom library!
